Rik Breukers keen on a return to TCR Australia
Factory Audi Rik Breukers says that would like to return to TCR Australia competition in the near future, if a deal can be found.
The Dutchman stepped into the Melbourne Performance Centre Audi RS 3 at the opening round of the 2019 carsales TCR Australia Series at Sydney Motorsport Park weekend, finishing fifth in the first race and enjoying some healthy dices until running into the back of the stalled Alfa Romeo of Jimmy Vernon at the start of Race 3.
Besides the racing, Breukers was also included in the category’s appearance on the Seven Network’s Sunrise breakfast program where he took weather man Sam Mac for a drive around the Sydney Motorsport park circuit.
Breukers deal in the MPC Audi was a one-off, but the 20-year-old sportscar ace is keen on making a return.
“I really don’t know about coming back for more TCR races in Australia,” he said.
“I hope to be back later in the year, so we’ll have to wait and see.”
Breukers’ Audi competed with backing from the TCR Spa 500, a landmark race that will be held at the famous Spa Francorchamps circuit on October 3 this year.
The event will be run in a partnership between WSC and Creventic, which is owned by Breukers’ father Ivo Breukers.
Both Rik and his father will compete in the race, joined by touring car stalwart Tom Coronel.
Breukers says that he hopes some Australian TCR drivers will compete in the 500 lap race.
“It’s a great competition and I’m glad to be here.
“It’s going to be a great endurance race,” he said.
“It’s going to be the biggest TCR race ever. It’s basically a 23 hour race with only TCR cars on one of the best circuits in the world, Spa Fr.
“Personally, I’m really looking forward to this race and I really hope that some of the Australian teams can come as well.”
The next round of the carsales TCR Australia Series will be held at Phillip Island.
Every race of TCR Australia is broadcast live, free and in HD on SBS. Tickets for the event will go on sale this week.
