John Martin reflects on drama-filled Island weekend

John Martin has rued a series of misfortunes that ultimately saw his Honda Civic heavily damaged in the final race at Phillip Island on the weekend.

Martin took his Civic Type R to a strong fifth in qualifying but was taken out of the first race after becoming involved in a lap one incident. In Race 2, his Civic suffered a tyre failure, forcing him to start from the back of the grid for what turned out to be a damaging Race 3.

While it was a disappointing end, the silver lining for Martin is that when everything is pointed in the right direction, his Honda is a genuine threat.

“It’s was not ideal. I got turned around and you can’t stop when you get back on the grass,” said Martin.

“The Honda has heaps of pace, but it’s really frustrating at the moment because we didn’t qualify to our potential, then in Race 1 I got turned around, and it becomes a chain reaction. then a tyre failure in Race 2 put us to the back.

“The one good thing from the weekend is that we have plenty of pace.”
