Kiwi racer proves old sim gear can still do the job
New Zealand TCR racer Rowan Shepherd took victory in the reverse grid race last night using a simulator that has says is more than a decade old.
Shepard scored a commanding win in the second race in the first round of the carsales ARG eSport Cup, leading home Brett Holdsworth and Aaron Cameron.
The first race was taken out by former British Touring Car champion Ash Sutton.

Competing from his living room in Rolleston, Shepherd qualified a lowly 48th of 52 entries for the opening race. Unfazed, Shepard quickly went about moving his way through the field, and at the conclusion of the 30 minute race, he had muscled his way into 26th position. This result earned him pole position for Race 2 where he drove away from the field to take a dominant lights to flag victory.
Using an ageing steering wheel and pedal set-up, Shepherd said that it proved you can still get a lot of of old equipment.
“I run a 11-year-old Logitech G27 steering wheel and pedal combo which is a little embarrassing compared to most setups but it does prove that you can still win races with a $300-400 piece of kit,” said Shepherd.
“I’m incredibly happy with the win. It was a real roller coaster and proves just like real racing, anything can happen.
“It’s great to see so many professional and top-rated drivers getting in behind this well-run series and was great to see team-mate Jaden Ransley post two very strong results. Very cool to see the Track Tec colours take the chequered and is a credit to them for organising our New Zealand team.”
Round 2 of the carsales ARG eSport Cup will be held at Zolder, Belgium, next Thursday night.
