Honda Civic Type R wins TCR model of the year accolade
For the second consecutive year, the Honda Civic Type R has been named TCR Model of the Year, becoming the first model to win this honorary accolade twice.
The Model of the Year is awarded by WSC on the basis of a classification that takes into account the results achieved by all the TCR-certified model cars in all the TCR-sanctioned races held during the season.
During a season that was largely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, a total of 226 races awarded points for the Model of the Year classification. The Honda Civic cars have scored 6034.75 points, claiming 44 victories in 12 different championships or series and in the ADAC 24H race at the Nürburgring.
The Audi RS 3 LMS and the Hyundai i30 N were classified second and third.
A total of 14 different models scored points for the Model of the Year classification.
WSC President Marcello Lotti said that credit for this result goes to Honda’s technical partner JAS Motorsport.
“This second consecutive Model of the Year award for the Honda Civic Type R is testament to the professionalism and passion with which Honda and its technical partner JAS Motorsport have always supported their customer teams in all the TCR competitions around the world,” said Lotti.
“Their efforts have been deservedly repaid with the brilliant results achieved by the drivers who were at the wheel of the many Civic cars that took to the track during this difficult season.”
Mads Fischer from JAS Motorsport said that his team based in Arluno, Italy, can all feel proud of this result.
“It is a huge honour to see the Honda Civic Type R TCR named as the TCR Model of the Year, and even more so as the first car to win this prestigious award two years in a row,” he said.
“We are extremely proud to be a technical partner of Honda for over 20 years and to have achieved this success for them. This award is both a testament to the determination and professionalism of our customer TCR teams across the world and also a vindication of both the quality of the Honda Civic Type R production model and of the technical and sales support we offer to our customers. There is an incredibly hard-working group of people at our headquarters in, comprising mechanics, engineers, logistic, sales and support staff, and this shines a light on the fantastic job they have all done on the Civic Type R TCR project.”
Honda will be represented in TCR Australia by Wall Racing as JAS Motorsport’s technical partner. Wall Racing will run two cars in the opening round, while they also have two more cars available.
Privateer entrants Michael Clemente and Zac Soutar will also compete in Honda Civic Type R entries.
The opening round of the TCR Australia Series will be held on January 24-26 at Symmons Plains Raceway in Tasmania.
