Who is the Astrontech Qualifying gun in TCR so far?

The numbers have been crunched and the result is in … MPC Bostik Racing’s Chaz Mostert is the Astrontech Qualifying king after four rounds of the 2021 Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series.

Of the 18 drivers who have contested all four rounds so far, Mostert has an average qualifying position of 2.75 – a number more than doubled by the next best qualifier in the series – Ashley Seward Motorsport’s Lee Holdsworth (5.75).

NOTE: Qualifying for the third round at Mount Panorama was, effectively, a lottery result after red flag periods meant that not all drivers logged fast laps.

Mostert has used his top qualifying efforts to best effect too, currently leading the title by 106 points over his Melbourne Performance Centre team-mate Luke King, who sits fourth on the qualifying list.

Peugeot star Aaron Cameron is the third-best qualifier in the field, and if not for his crash in the last race at Sydney Motorsport Park, would be even higher than fifth in the outright series standings.

Honda’s top qualifying performer is Tony D’Alberto. The Victorian, driving the Wall Racing-prepared Civic Type R TCR, has endured an up and down run of qualifying form and results, but his fifth placed qualifying average is a surprise given that his best qualifying results include just two sevenths!

After qualifying in the double-figures for the first three rounds, GRM Renault driver Dylan O’Keeffe also sits a surprisingly high equal fifth with D’Alberto, benefitting from his stand-out pole position in the last round at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Wall Racing’s second Honda driver John Martin could rue not being higher on the qualifying list. After the brand’s obvious challenges at Symmons Plains when Martin qualified last in the field, his past three qualifying and race results have propelled him to seventh in the title fight – the best of the Civic drivers.

TCR’s newest race winner Michael Caruso is eighth on the qualifying list, and if not for an unrepresentative time in the red-flag ridden Bathurst session, his score would likely be much higher.

Hyundai drivers Brad Shiels (Tilton Racing) and Josh Buchan (HMO Customer Racing) are equal ninth on the list, with Buchan’s score tarnished by the Bathurst anomaly.

Of note outside the top 10 is Buchan’s team-mate Nathan Morcom. The Sydneysider is fourth in the series points score, but qualifying has not been too kind, sitting 13th in the average score.

The next round of the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series takes us into unknown territory at Morgan Park Raceway in Queensland for Round 5 on June 25-27. Tickets must be pre-purchased. CLICK HERE to secure your ticket.
