Series leader Tony D’Alberto tops opening practice at Sydney Motorsport Park
Current Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series leader Tony D’Alberto has topped the opening practice session for Round 4 at Sydney Motorsport Park.
A last gasp 1m 34.797s lap put D’Alberto in his Honda Australia Wall Racing Civic Type R TCR at the top of the timesheets, 0.238s clear of inaugural series winner Will Brown.
Third for the session was race winning privateer Zac Soutar in the Spicers Australia Honda Civic Type R TCR, while LMCT+ Racing GRM’s James Moffat continued the Renault Megane RS TCR good form at Sydney Motorsport Park to finish ahead of the lead HMO Customer Racing Hyundai i30 N TCR of Nathan Morcom.
Brown set the early pace in the LIQUI MOLY Team MPC Audi RS3 LMS TCR with a 1m 35.036s to lead Morcom by 0.226s.
After setting the third fastest time on his first run, Moffat moved to second in his Renault Megane RS TCR after posting a 1m 35.239s.
Rounding out the top five during the initial phase was Dylan O’Keeffe in the Schaeffler GRM Peugeot 308 TCR as he dropped to seventh by the end of the session.
Morcom’s HMO Customer Racing teammate and double winner from last year Josh Buchan was sixth as behind O’Keeffe in the lead Peugeot was stablemate Jordan Cox in the Swyftx GRM 308 TCR.
After achieving his first win at the corresponding event last year, Michael Caruso placed ninth in his Autoglym Ashley Seward Motorsport Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce TCR and rounding out the top 10 was privateer Hyundai driver Luke King for Moutai/ZIP PAY.
There were no interruptions during the session as series returnee Fabian Coulthard was 11th in the Stan Sport Wall Racing Honda Civic Type R TCR as he rounded out the drivers setting a time within a second of D’Alberto’s benchmark.
Behind the Phillip Island race winner were Burson Auto Part Racing’s Ben Bargwanna Hyundai privateer Brad Shiels for Royal Purple Racing, Bathurst polesitter Aaron Cameron in his Valvoline Team GRM Peugeot and Jay Hanson returning to his latest specification Audi RS3 LMS TCR.
Featuring new Motul naming rights support this weekend, Michael Clemente was 16th in his Honda Civic Type R, the second Renault for Valvoline Team GRM’s Kody Garland followed from the Challenge Motorsport Audi of Iain McDougall and Purple Sector’s Lachlan Mineeff in his Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR.
HMO Customer Racing’s Bailey Sweeny and Alfa Romeo privateer Braydan Willmington completed the field.
A second practice follows at 7:30pm AEST this evening giving many Supercheap Auto TCR Australia competitors the first chance to experience conditions under lights ahead of tomorrow’s opening race.
The SpeedSeries in Sydney will feature seven racing categories and 15 hours of live and ad-break free coverage on Stan Sport across Saturday and Sunday.
The opening race under lights at Sydney Motorsport Park also headlines 9Gem’s two hour live broadcast starting from 5:30pm AEST.
