Jordan Cox’s smooth transition
A change of brand ahead of the 2022 Supercheap Auto TCR Australia season has not diminished Jordan Cox’s title winning capabilities as he enters the second half of the schedule right in the fight.
Transferring from the often temperamental Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce TCR to the increasingly competitive Peugeot 308 TCR package has proven more than successful for the Garry Rogers Motorsport driver.
Add into the equation Australian crypto exchange Swyftx continuing its support for a full-season after it tasted success with Cox last year and the Kirrawee mechanic had all boxes ticked for a strong title tilt.
Cox’s campaign failed to get off to the best start as he qualified 10th, but spun on the warm up lap to be 16th in the opening race. Starting from pole due to the inverted top 10 format for Race 2, Cox was faultless in taking victory before backing it up with third in the final.
Phillip Island was Cox’s bogey track in 2021, but he dispelled these to record a second, fourth and sixth in the three races to leave second in the points.
Just two-points separated Cox from Tony D’Alberto as Bathurst approached and this was emphasised when the Peugeots locked out the first two rows on the grid.
However, the promising start ended in disappointment for Cox as he retired with a mechanical problem.
In Race 2, a customary Cox charge placed him inside the top 10 until a tangle with stablemate Aaron Cameron dropped him to 11th. Unable to scythe his way through the field like in Race 2, Cox had to settle for fourth and in a demonstration of how close this series is, he dropped to eighth in the standings.
Sydney Motorsport Park awaited the contenders next and as Cox’s home track, his cheer squad was out in full force.
Cox didn’t disappoint.
A noted Hyundai circuit, Cox was a contender for much of the weekend securing two podiums and a sixth in Race 2’s inverted top 10 affair to springboard back to fourth in the standings.
Although his Bathurst retirement was a setback, Cox trails series leader D’Alberto by just 34-points and will remain a factor as the title reaches its conclusion.
Supercheap Auto TCR Australia alongside the SpeedSeries recommence at Queensland Raceway on August 5-7.
