Supercars engineer teams with TCR privateer at Sandown

Long-time Brad Jones Racing engineer Tony Woodward will sample Supercheap Auto TCR Australia at Sandown this weekend.

Woodward will engineer impressive privateer Luke King’s Moutai-supported Hyundai i30 N TCR at Sandown, his first as an engineer in the popular turbo-charged class.

Woodward is a staple at the Albury-based squad where he currently holds the role of race engineer to Andre Heimgartner in this year’s Supercars Championship.

Through King’s close relationship with former BJR driver Jason Bright and previous engineer Wally Storey, Woodward was suggested, and he accepted.

“Tony Woodward’s name popped up when we knew Brighty (Jason Bright) wasn’t going to be around in Melbourne this weekend,” King explained.

“Tony was someone Brighty recommended and comes from the Wally Storey school of engineers as both worked at Brad Jones Racing.

“Having worked with both Brighty and Wally led us down this path, so Tony’s come out this weekend.”

Although he has no prior experience in TCR, King isn’t worried as Woodward has been preparing ahead of his debut engineering stint.

“When we had asked Tony if he would do it and he agreed, he has since been chatting to Hyundai Motorsport in Germany to ensure he understands and ensured he has all the access to our data systems,” said King.

“The i30 N TCR runs a Life program, which is probably a lot different to the similar MoTeC system he’s used to.

“Tony is pretty keen for it. He’s ready for a new challenge with a completely different car in a fresh team and a fresh series.”

Despite missing the opening two rounds, King has performed well at Sydney Motorsport Park and Queensland Raceway, finishing on the podium in one of the races at each venue.

He is aiming to build on this at Sandown.

“It’s been good and all in a car we chose mainly for the Sydney round,” King admitted.

“I thought we could get a good result there easily, but to get one at Queensland Raceway was awesome and I reckon we’ll be good here at Sandown as well.

In addition to regular partners Moutai, ZIP PAY, Fast Track Communications and Pertamina, King welcomes property app BuyCloud as a supporter at Sandown.

Designed to provide a streamlined process by having agents, lenders, lawyers and brokers in one platform, BuyCloud is set to launch in 2023.

“It’s a company that started up on the Central Coast where I’m originally from and it’s good to have that type of support,” said King.

“It’s really cool to have BuyCloud onboard and the team there are doing interesting things.”

The Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series will contest three races at Sandown as part of the SpeedSeries event also including the Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia Powered by AWS, Gulf Western Oil Touring Car Masters and the final round for the Turtle Wax Trans Am Series.
