Jay Hanson takes second pole of the season at Sandown

MPC AWC Racing’s Jay Hanson has scored his second pole of the season in a chaotic Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series qualifying session.

Inclement conditions provided a challenge for drivers as Hanson led the way during a shortened opening segment on a 1m 22.523s in his Audi RS3 LMS TCR to lead privateer Luke King by 0.013s driving the Moutai/ZIP PAY Hyundai i30 N TCR.

Revelling in the conditions, LIQUI MOLY Team MPC’s Will Brown was third from HMO Customer Racing rookie Bailey Sweeny and Aaron Cameron driving the Team Valvoline GRM Peugeot 308 TCR.

Leading the remaining entries to make it through was series leader Tony D’Alberto driving the Honda Wall Racing Civic Type R TCR, Schaeffler GRM Peugeot’s Dylan O’Keeffe after a difficult run yesterday and the sole Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce TCR in the field of Autoglym Ashley Seward Motorsport’s Michael Caruso.

HMO Customer Racing’s Josh Buchan Hyundai i30 N TCR and privateer Zac Soutar in the Spicers Australia-supported Honda Civic Type R TCR also made it through to the battle for Astrontech Pole Position.

An off at Turn 1 for Buchan’s teammate Nathan Morcom caused the premature end to the first segment.

This left current series runner up Jordan Cox, Lachlan Mineeff, Morcom, Ben Bargwanna in his repaired Peugeot, Michael Clemente, Kody Garland, Iain McDougall and James Moffat were all knocked out.

It was all Hanson in the second segment as he led throughout on a 1m 22.229s despite King challenging consistently, but it was Cameron with a last gasp lap jumping to second just 0.297s off the Audi.

King placed third as Soutar again impressed in fourth from Brown, D’Alberto, O’Keeffe, Caruso, Sweeny and Buchan.

The opening race for Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series at Sandown is scheduled to start at 4:20pm AEST on both Stan Sport and 9Gem.

The Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series will contest three races at Sandown as part of the SpeedSeries event also including the Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia Powered by AWS, Gulf Western Oil Touring Car Masters and the final round for the Turtle Wax Trans Am Series.
