Mostert bags pole in dramatic qualifying session

Chaz Mostert bagged pole position in a dramatic qualifying session for the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series at Mount Panorama.

Picture-perfect weather conditions greeted the drivers on Saturday morning as they took to the track to decide the grid for Race 1.

After the first handful of runs, the #25 Bostik Audi RS3 of Mostert ruled the leaderboard having laid down an early marker of 2:16.076s.

That became an important lap when the scheduled 25-minute hit-out was neutralised in the second half.

An incident for Jordan Cox at The Chase necessitated a red flag, however, the session did not resume and the results were declared.

Cox went off and became beached in the gravel, which made for a lengthy recovery.

Mostert clinched his second pole of the season with the fastest lap of qualifying by nearly a second as the rest of the field fell short, presumably not getting their best lap in before the stoppage.

The Peugeot 308 of Aaron Cameron will start alongside Mostert on the front row of the grid, with Cameron setting a 2:17.031s to place him second.

Former Bathurst 1000 winner and Audi RS3 driver Garth Tander took third position, a further second back, ahead of Cox in his Alfa Romeo.

Another Alfa Romeo, this one driven by Jay Hanson rounded out the top five.

Brad Shiels, Lee Holdsworth, Tony D’Alberto, John Martin, and Luke King completed the top 10.

The opening race of the weekend is scheduled for 10:40 local time and will be Live on the screens of Seven in Australia.
