Father-son team Jason and Ben Bargwanna not only race against each other, but work together on a weekly basis as part of the family courier business.

Established four years ago by the Bargwanna family, Gippsland Couriers employs approximately 60 people and has 30 vehicles ranging from semi-trailers to vans within its fleet.

“The phone doesn’t stop ringing,” Jason remarked.

“It’s pretty exciting to work alongside our motorsport commitments as well, it’s good for us that both of our boys have worked within our business, with our older son moving onto his career and we’re now watching Ben develop his.

“It’s good to have Ben in the business as well, but I make him train before he comes to work because I believe in hard work and if he wants it enough, he can work hard for it.”

Having raced Garry Rogers Motorsport-prepared Peugeot 308 TCRs in, this correlates to the Gippsland Couriers fleet where the French marque’s commercial vans are used.

“We talk about race on Sunday, sell on Monday, through our relationship with Peugeot we’ve actually got a few of the brand’s vans in our fleet, so there are some symmetries between on and off track,” Jason revealed.

After a season best performance at Bathurst, which included his maiden Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series pole position, Ben returned to his day job delivering items across the Gippsland area of Victoria.

“I’m the delivery man Monday to Friday and I’m also dad’s assistant whenever he needs me, so that’s pretty much my role,” he explained.

“For dad I’ll do special deliveries or moving items, using a forklift, jobs along those lines, but not too much behind the desk, just more hands on stuff.

“In the world of delivering, couriering, Australia Post etc, we’re a very small blip as we’re based out of a very small shed with around 30 vehicles, which isn’t very big within the industry.”

“We work with other freight companies to cover Melbourne as well and we send a lot of freight that goes past that border, so we pass it to those companies to complete the delivery.”

But the Bargwanna’s link to TCR continues in its work.

“The freight company we do most of our work with is Vic-Tas, which funnily enough is located on the back fence of GRM,” Ben explained.
